May & June Art Display

Flowers are "blooming" at the library! We have flower paintings on display during May and June, created by Traer artist Michael Rickard.  Some of his pieces are traditional paintings, and others are digitally produced paintings.  They are all lovely! Stop in to browse and enjoy their beauty!

Down & Dirty: Garden Walks and Greenhouse/She-Shed/Chicken Coop Tours

It's that time of year already! It's time for gardening and landscaping and working outside! Laurie will again be organizing and leading Garden Walks through local gardens, but this year she is also adding in some greenhouses and she-sheds! Maybe even a chicken coop! This is a great way to get new ideas for your own gardens, and maybe inspire you to build your own greenhouse or she-shed.

We will kick off the “tour season” with a visit to Paul Wendt’s greenhouse on Wednesday, May 1 at 3:30.  We meet at the library to ride together, or you can always call to get the address and meet us there.

Here is the schedule so far:

Wed. May 1 @ 3:30  Paul Wendt Greenhouse Tour

Wed. May 8 @ 3:30 Donna Kersten Garden Walk

Wed: May 22 @ 2:00  Meet behind the library to help plant our raised bed gardens

Dr. Mike Bechtel & His Exotic Animals:

You won't want to miss this family program!  On Wednesday, June 19 at 7:00pm, Dr. Mike Bechtel (Bec), Associate Professor of Science Education at Wartburg College, will be bringing exotic animals from his extensive collection to the Traer Public Library!

Animals he might be bringing include pythons, tortises, turtles, miniature chickens, frogs, large arthropods, rodents and lizards.  He brings at least 4 different species with multiple specimens of each species, and gives a hands-on presentation- you are able to see and touch and interact with his animals!

Here is a little bit about Bec:

Dr. Michael D. Bechtel (commonly known as Bec) will be visiting your library this summer. Bec taught
high school sciences in the public school system for twenty years before moving into the college setting
and now teaches student teachers at Wartburg College in Waverly. An Associate Professor of Science
Education, Bec is an Iowa native who grew up on a small farm in northeast Iowa (Waukon) where he
acquired his love for living things (biophilia). He has been involved with exotic animal husbandry for as
long as he can remember, raising snakes, lizards, poison dart frogs, turtles, tortoises, and seramas
(miniature chickens) on Wartburg’s campus and often in his classroom. He has just returned from the
Amazon rainforest (May 11) where he took students to explore nature in South America. More
information about him can be found at https://www.wartburg.edu/people/michael-bechtel/

Bec extends an open invitation to anyone to visit to the Wartburg College campus, and his menagerie of
animals at the Science Center. Some of the things on display in the hallways and courtyard include dart
frog terrariums, eels, aquaponics systems, and six giant sulcata tortoises.
